Unit 1A

Identify and agree arts challenge
1. My arts challenge is to create a group film by attending the BFI Academy which will hopefully provide me with skills to develop my work in college and as a filmmaker, as well as improving my understanding of the film industry and its multiple layers.

2. I have chosen this arts challenge because I have always had a love for film and have only recently become fascinated in the production aspect of film. By doing this arts challenge, I will get a more realistic idea of what it will be like to work in the industry in the future and hopefully expand the skills I have already.

3. I will achieve this goal by engaging more with the films I watch so I can develop a good critique which I can then apply to my own projects. I will also do this by learning from my team mates and working with them to produce the best piece of work that I can which will be amplified by new techniques I will learn about lighting, sound, editing and camera work.

4. My ambitions are to finish college and go to university (hopefully Guildhall School of Music and Drama) to study stage management and lighting and to potentially pursue an MA in directing so that I will have all forms of media to express myself in. I hope to create movies and plays about cultural and social problems which will then enable the public to improve their world.

5. My current skills are in directing and lighting because I work with various drama companies and I often have to think about how a message can be conveyed in the strongest way on stage, so my opinion is often required, even if it isn't followed through. I have recently been more interested in editing due to college and my understanding of how to use the software has improved since my first task. I can easily think of how the different effects on the software can be used to evoke a different message.

6. I would like to be able to improve my technique with camera work and technique so that my work feels more fluid and natural rather than jumpy and disorientating. But, I would like to be more well rounded as a film maker, so being able to use all the equipment on a set such as lights and sound (boom or microphones) easily. I want to be able to naturally think about all the aspects involved in a film to convey an emotional and powerful message in future work I might produce.
