Day 9

12th of November 2016

Today was the last day of BFI, and the last day we had to edit our footage.
We started off the day with a talk from Richard Wakefield who showed us how to use  DSLR camera and what the benefits were from choosing it over a standard filming camera. I found this extremely useful as I have recently purchased a DSLR camera for my own personal projects that I want to pursue outside of college.
Richard demonstrated what the best settings were to use on the camera and showed us different techniques to make our filming more professional. Something that people often forget with cameras is that you have to purchase many different lenses to get a good effect and you can't rely solely on the lens that comes with the camera. I will definitely consider saving up for a 16-35mm lens or a prime lens as it will make the quality of my filming seem more professional but I might choose the prime lens as it is cheaper.
Richard also explained to us different ways of getting into the industry, by doing free promo films for brands or companies and especially filming for events such as weddings or anniversaries. He explained that from here, you are able to develop your own skills and styles as a film maker as well as putting yourself out there for people to hire you. He also stated that it is important to make it easy for people to find your work on social media as it can help you go viral and become more successful.
An important tip was to make sure to make a logo for your work so that it is recognisable and easier to find.  It is also important to be friendly and introduce yourself to people first rather than relying on phoning and emailing because you appear more approachable and friendly.
Afterwards, we finished editing our video. We started by doing a final edit, by just polishing the work we had done previously to fit the mood and make it appear more fluid.
We only had to focus on sound afterwards as we had done a large chunk of work the week before. We chose to make a soundtrack or backing track on Garage Band because all the music we wanted to use was too popular and would cause copy writing issues.
Tiegan, Liam and I went off to record some foley to include in our video whilst the others finished the final edit and got together the rest of the music. We then looked at colour grading to match the mood of the video.
