Day 1

Saturday 15th October
We arrived at the BFI film academy in Oxford at 10:00am. I was incredibly nervous about the day because of meeting completely new people and I was worried that I wouldn't be as skilled as the other people within my course.

Luckily our first day we just practiced different shot types which I had already learnt in college, so I felt very familiar with the task. When we arrived we received a folder with a timetable, welcome sheet and a list of exercise sheets which needed to be completed over the time in the course. To help with our task today, we had a sheet outlining a storyboard and different shot types which we had to identify and then use for our practice task. The scene we were given was a classic western cowboy shoot out, consisting of 10 shots.

We only had around an hour to film, but we managed to get it done fairly quickly, making sure that we had lots of footage to choose from. We all got to take it in turns to film and direct the piece while two other members of our team acted in it for us.

After the lunch break, we had to edit our work using Premiere Pro but we had to share the computers so me and another girl in my group worked together to produce our final piece of work. Miguel (one of the staff) walked us through the different features in Premiere Pro and the different ways which they can be used which was really insightful for me because, although I already knew how to use it, I was able to learn special, technical skills which will help me with my college work after the course. While we were editing, we were able to use special features which the BFI had saved onto the computers which included music, gunshot sounds and lighting as well as a filter.
We wanted to give our work a warm feeling because it looked more like an old western film but we chose not to use the gunshot light because it didn't look that realistic and wouldn't fit with the mood of our video.

The passwords for the two videos are either Duel1 or Liam1.
Once we had finished, we sat together with all the other groups and watched through some of their footage, then we began looking at what we would be doing for the rest of the course and what was required of us to receive a Silver Arts Award.
