Day 5

26th of October 2016

This morning we had a talk from Nick about working in the broadcasting industry, specifically in television documentaries. Nick showed us a few of his own documentaries and talked about his own production company called "Landmark Films" which he established on his own. Nick explained to us how most television documentaries require a story to have conflict, emotion and for it to be relatable or else the audience wont find it engaging and it is unlikely that a broadcasting company will commission it. We were told that most documentaries are often filmed in a police inc. or a hospital because there is always drama or something intense happening so not much editing is needed.

I was quite interested by the idea of working on a TV documentary as you are always out, meeting new people and seeing the extremes of life be it good or bad. I love emotional pieces of work and I would love to learn more about people because I am also really interested in psychology.
I think I would be able to achieve this if I improve my technology and editing skills which will happen naturally at college as its part of our specification and I enjoy it anyway. We then briefly worked on a route map which we drew up for ourselves on what we want to do in the future and how we would get into the industry.
Afterwards we got back into our production groups to go through our final pre-production work which included our shooting schedule, securing a location and going through the script. Peter and Lily managed to work out an incredibly clever system of laying out the different shots and then choosing an order to film them in which we chose based on most reoccurring shot type. Tiegan wrote a really good script which focused mostly on action but helped to developed the mood and tone of the piece in the most natural way possible. We also managed to sort out a way where we can take all the equipment to Thame without having to leave incredibly early because one of the staff will drive some of us and the equipment to Tiegan's house, which is incredibly nice of her.

At the end of the day, my actor called Ollie and Oscars actor called Leo managed to meet us and each other so that they can get an idea of t what it will be like to work with us and so that it won't be awkward tomorrow. We gave them the scripts and a description of how we would like them to act tomorrow and we went home to get an early night for tomorrow.
